Since Kev can't join in on the reggae thread here you go mate... From the glory years of uk punk to the late 70s to the US hardcore of the 80s and onto the skate scene of the 90s... eschewing obvious choices of pistols and the clash... |

Nice one Pooley, some good tunes there mate **thumbup You and I are probably the only two on here who have any real musical taste **thumbup Reggae ? It all sounds the f.ekkin same, talk about boring music, give me a break FFS. Right I'll be posting a classic (and not so classic) punk song every day for the rest of the year :D Lets get the party started with an all time classic from The Ruts (what a waste that Malcolm Owen died so young back in 1980). kro |

Bluenose Kev you could say the same about any genre of music if your anti to that kind of music. Punk is no different nonetheless I am a music lover and have had periods of my life where I followed punk myself. I saw the Angelic Upstarts at Digbeth civic hall during the early 80's when being a man of colour at a gig full of skinheads and punks was risky beyond belief. I missed the gigs when the cockney rejects came to Brum bringing a few barmy cockneys in red Harrington jackets that came off the train from London and went dolally hitting and smacking anything in the vicinity. Some great stories from those that went. I think even the rejects themselves got involved in the trouble that occurred that night. Of the bands I remember from the top of my head the following were also worthy of mention. Ruts, skids, sham 69, billy idol... Edited by clapton bluenose, Jan 30 2015, 07:08 PM.

Ignoring the wind up merchant trying to derail the thread lets move on shall we I'm fonder of the 80s/90s US pun than the 70s UK stuff - the 'crunchier' guitar sound is more enjoyable than the 'Spiky' UK sound. While the 00s has not given much good music IMO there are a few exceptions The following are particular favourites: |

From what I've seen so far, it certainly isn't for me and it's nowhere near what I would personally dub as decent music .....not even remotely close Carry On Camping |

Trying to remember how I got into the Dead Kennedys, must have been when I used to listen to John Peel back in the late 70's early 80's late at night. Anyhow classic from 1981, great guitar riff, when I play this I play it LOUD ! :dancer: |

Reading your post I decided to google that very notion Uk or USA punk. Until I read what you said I had always thought the Uk were way out in front when it came to this sort of anger expressed through music. It would seem there's a 50/50 split of opinion. I am in the camp of uk because I believe we gave that genre of music a platform for it to progress. |

As with any genre it's about sorting the wheat from the chaff. Love a lot of punk - IMO the first Clash album is the epitome of how exciting and invigorating and important it could be, whilst the Buzzcocks had the tunes. That said, for me Post-Punk is the more exciting (of course, it couldn't happen without the first wave of '77) with PIL, Joy Division, Pop Group, gang of Four, Bauhaus, The Cure, Magazine, Siouxise and the Banshees, Cabaret Voltaire, and about a million others beside. I genuinely think 1977-1982 is one of the most creative, forward-thinking eras; a time where bands cast aside genre and prejudice and made punks-funky music to pogo and dance to at the same time. **thumbup Best modern (ish) punk song is Motown Junk by Manics - "I laughed when Lennon got shot" indeed! I couldn't really take to punk. I was always more into the bands that could play, which is not to sound nasty, but for all that I do like a few songs by the Ramones, Stranglers, Demolition 23 and a few others, I'll always prefer the pomp of those bands that they were trying to eclipse, like Genesis, Rush, Iron Maiden and so on. |

My scariest moment at a gig ever was at a Dead Kennedy's gig in Coventry in the late 70's. They had some seriously juiced-up fans who were just up for a fight, and they picked up on my mate Les because he had long hair. Les unfortunately was no shrinking violet and he went back at 'em almost as hard. I dragged Les away from the fight, but the idiot kept going back for more, time after time. Eventually just at the point when we were about to get well and truly carved up, I managed to drag Les out of the back door and down the street. Fortunately being sober we were considerably faster than those chasing us. Years later it was Les's house in Small Heath that the 2005 tornado famously tore the roof off of. Serves the ******* right. Clap its amazing how many people recall that cockney rejects gig, think it was at old Ceder club, ended up with a load of Quinton lads giving it to them big stylke and nicking some of their equipment, Rejects were so annoyed they jumped out of van and beat up some guy on way back to motorway, think one of them, got jailed over it but hell of a long time ago posss79? Loved The Upstarts they released some great punk songs, although at first they were more of a Skinhead band. Love Leave Me Alone & England and there are loads more great songs from them..... Clapton reminded me of this all time Punk classic. kro Edited by bluenosekev, Feb 2 2015, 11:37 AM.

Des one of my school mates was with the group that got attacked by the band. That sort of sewed the seed for what followed both from a punk band and footy fan perspective. I remember playing west ham in 1980 I think and I have never ran as much for a home game as I did that day. The stories of that night at the cedar club helped to immortalise the hammers as invincible. This was an era where the skinhead books were the most sought after literature from the school library. Punk and violence became intertwined and hard to separate. Not sure but from the top of my head it was either the skids or ruts that became disillusioned after playing an anti racist gig that drew the unwanted attention of a hard core right wing mob that rioted during that said concert. If anything the skins ruined the punk industry in the uk. |
